She began her standup career in 1992, being a part of the 1993-94 season of Saturday Night Live (SNL). She worked there as a writer and a featured actor for eighteen weeks. After one season she was fired from there and none of her sketches that she wrote got aired. One of the members of the show Bob Odenkirk explained to the media that her work didn’t work because she had a voice and opinion of her own. He also said that she plays a character but does not get lost in the career, she makes the character her own. When asked about getting fired from the job she addressed that she wasn’t prepared when she joined the show. The incident affected her confidence for a year but also made her tough when it came to her choices in the career. In 1996, she appeared on The Larry Sanders Show ” The New Writer”. In February 2007, her television sitcom The Sarah Silverman Program aired on the channel Comedy Central. the program series had an overall view of  1.81 million. In September 2007, she hosted the MTV Movie Awards. She played the role of Geraldine in the movie Take This Waltz along with co-actors Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams. Personal life

Silverman became a vegetarian at the age of ten. She has suffered depression for the longest time which made her addicted to Xanax. She wrote a book, an autobiography on her life named  The Bedwetter. She stated in one of her interviews that she does not want to have a biological child because of two reasons that there are a lot of orphans in this world who need a parent and she is scared of the fact that her child might inherit her depression. She has been an activist fighting for the rights of women. She wrote an open letter to Angela Markel and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and asked them to focus on women’s problems as they are the head of the G7 in Germany and the AU in Ethiopia. She has been an active feminist working for the rights of women.

For a long period of time, she dated her fellow SNL writer Dave Attell. In 2002, she dated Jimmy Kimmel but around July 2008 it was heard that they separated.
